If I know all about Charles spurgeon and the Puritans but have no love I'm nothing.If I carry under my arm the westminster confession of faith but have not love I'm nothing.If I stand for the faith against liberalism but have not love I'm nothing.If I know about the five points of calvinism and have a literal translation of the bible but have not love I'm nothing.If I keep the church pure by raming down peoples throates reformed theology and church dicipline, but have not love I'm nothing.If I admire John piper,R C Sproul and John MacArthur but have not love I'm nothing.If I start worship wars so traditional worship is in the church but have not love I'm nothing.If I stand against the ecumenical movement but have not love I'm nothing.If I stand for expository preaching and solid bible teaching but have not love I'm nothing.If I'm respected by my reformed friends because I have a nice family and Job and good reformed books but have not love I'm nothing.If I go to a sound church and read the right magazines and go to the reformed conferences but have not love I'm nothing.
We need sound theology as the church is loosing it's biblical roots but we also need love.Yes we need love .We need love in our pastoral care as many of us as reformed pastors are to dogmatic ,so ready to judge not so ready to listen and care.We need love in our pulpits.The Lord Jesus said feed the flock not ram truth down the flocks throat.We must preach with deep love in the pulpit.The Lords people are crying out for love.I know some will say we need to stand for truth-o yes we do ,but Jesus washed the diciples feet,he died on a cross.Wash the feet of the church and love the church so you are ready to give your all for it.Then ,and only then will you have the right to say the things the church needs to hear but does not want to.Charles Dickens wrote that novel Oliver twist,the boy asked for some more porridge.The Lords people are asking us Pastors for more love.Please Sir can we have more love?
